Reporting to the Manager, Adult Programs, the Adult Literacy and Basic Education Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programs designed to enhance adult literacy in English and Inuktitut and expand basic educational competencies. The incumbent, through their activities, ensures that the Department adheres and responds to the requirements outlined in the Education Act and Regulations. The Coordinator works with Department staff and education stakeholders / partners to ensure basic education and literacy programs and services are available to adult learners in different organizations (e.g. colleges, non-profits, etc.) with a view to enabling Nunavummiut to achieve their educational and professional goals.
The incumbent is resposible and accountable for: monitoring the broad policies and priorities of the government as expressed in legislation regulations, the policy manual approved by the Executive, and any reports and documentation to ensure consistency across the division’s policy and programs; developing strategies as well as developing communication / guidance materials to ensure departmental staff and partners are aware of the department’s responsibilities; undertaking research to identify best practices in the field of adult literacy and basic education research and theory; developing program proposals to enhance adult literacy and basic education levels in Nunavut as well as managing and monitoring the effectiveness of adult basic education and literacy programs, strategies and resources.
The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree from a reconized university in Education or a related field with a concentration in adult education. The ideal candidate has Three (3) years’ experience in adult education and One (1) year experience in adult education development, research, monitoring and / or program design. Master’s degree and experience in Nunavut and community development are considered an assets.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
