PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Under the authority and supervision of the Senior Director, Apprenticeship Program – Adam Bond, the Community Liaison (CL) will develop and maintain effective relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations to encourage the registration of apprentices with NWAC’s National Apprenticeships Program (NAP) They will achieve this by working in close coordination with the Public Relations Task Group to ensure the development of multiple networks and partnerships with both the communities and influencers and in skilled trades-related industries.
SCOPE
The CL will be responsible for working within the Public Relations Task Group to develop and strengthen networks with Indigenous communities and organizations to promote awareness of, and registration with, the NAP. The CL will also support the planning, organizing, and hosting of online engagements and information webinars.
The CL will meet targets related to apprentice recruitment, online engagements and webinars and help ensure that those targets are completed on time, on budget, and using culturally appropriate and gender-based lenses that respect First Nation, Métis, Inuit Women and Girls and Indigenous members of the 2SLGBTQQIA communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the Public Relations Task Group as needed in the establishment of a coalition of Indigenous leaders and influencers in the skilled trades to promote awareness of the NAP and contribute to the development, expansion, and strengthening of the NAP network of partners, collaborators, and supporters.
Work in close coordination with the other members of the Public Relations Task Group to develop and expand a network on Indigenous communities and organizations to encourage the registration of apprentices with the NAP. This may included,but will not be limited to appearing and speaking at meetings, conferences, and community events.
Plan, organize and facilitate online engagement sessions and information webinars to obtain information on Indigenous gender-based barriers in the skilled trades, and to provide information on the NAP.
Perform other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
University degree in the area of policy, law, social sciences or other related studies or equivalent lived experience working on Indigenous issues will be considered;
Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with NGOs, organizations, interest groups and government, agencies or business/corporate entities;
Experience building and expanding third-party stakeholder networks and partnerships, especially with Indigenous peoples;
Relevant experience working or volunteering with Indigenous peoples, groups, or organizations is an asset; and,
Relevant experience working or volunteering with Not-for-Profit organizations or corporations is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge
The employee must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
Strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;
Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous issues, and norms and standards relevant to promotion and protection of Indigenous women’s rights;
Knowledge of key issues impacting Indigenous women and girls in Canada and internationally;
Some understanding of social policy (including violence prevention, employment and gender equality).
Skills
The employee must demonstrate the following skills:
Strong writing and verbal communication skills in English (fluency in French is a strong asset);
Strong networking, relationship-building and public speaking skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills;
Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions within the area, often on short notice;
Ability to minimize and resolve disputes diplomatically and expediently;
Ability to prioritize, multi-task and organize work effectively and under pressure;
Ability to facilitate meetings; and,
Personal Attributes
